Famous but deadly kite flying festival returns after 19-year ban
Event returns after decades-long ban with strict safety measures
After injuries and fatalities caused by sharp kite strings, falls, and celebratory gunfire, the kite-flying festival in Lahore, Pakistan, has returned after a 19-year ban. The event, known as the Basant festival, dates back centuries and is a significant cultural tradition.
Strict safety regulations introduced
Authorities have allowed the festival to resume only under strict safety regulations. These include warnings against the use of hazardous kites and the implementation of new rules to prevent accidents during the celebrations.
Injuries reported despite safety measures
Although the festival has resumed, at least two kite-flying-related injuries have been reported in the city, highlighting ongoing risks despite the new safety protocols.
Public demand leads to ban lift
The ban was lifted last year due to public demand, and this year’s festival kicked off at midnight with the Punjab Information Minister flying the first kite, symbolizing the return of the tradition.
