A new RCS update could connect iPhone and Android video calls, someday
RCS Universal Profile 4.0 introduces Messaging-Initiated Video Calls (MIVC)
The GSM Association (GSMA) has announced the finalized RCS Universal Profile 4.0 standard, which introduces Messaging-Initiated Video Calls (MIVC). This feature allows users to turn one-on-one or group RCS chats into video calls directly within their messaging apps.
Interoperability between iPhone and Android users
With RCS 4.0, users on both Android and iPhone devices may eventually be able to make interoperable video calls through their messaging apps. This development could enable seamless video communication across platforms, similar to how FaceTime works on Apple devices.
Key features of RCS 4.0
- Support for native video calls within messaging apps
- Enhanced text formatting capabilities
- Improved user experience with in-app video calling options
Current status and future outlook
While the feature is still in development and not yet widely available, the GSMA’s announcement of RCS 4.0 marks a significant step toward cross-platform video calling. Early adopters on Android devices, such as Galaxy phones, are already seeing the implementation of these features. Apple is expected to roll out enhanced RCS capabilities in upcoming software updates for iPhone users.
